3 Things to Look for in 3D 4WD Mats

Gavin Vasquez

If you're tired of having to scrub mud, dirt and sand out of your 4WD vehicle's carpets, then installing 3D mats will help. Typically made of plastics, these moulded mats protect your car's carpeting and keep it clean. When a mat gets dirty, you simply remove it, shake it out and then put it back again.

However, not all 3D mats are equal. Some have features that make them even more useful. Which features are good to have?

1. A Design That Holds Onto Dirt

While 3D mats catch dirt and debris, some don't always keep it on the mat that well. Even if the mat has raised edges, it may not work efficiently if its surface is too smooth. Any dirt that the mat picks up initially could slip around and move over the edges. Dust could blow around the car as you drive.

3D mats trap stuff more effectively if they have moulded or ridged surfaces. Some mats have channels set into their plastic that trap dirt deeper down; the dirt may still move, but it will end up stuck in the end of a channel.

Some mats use a ridge system rather than channels. These ridges trap and hold anything you track into the car until you can clean the mat up.

2. A Secure Hold

The backing on 3D mats is important. If a mat can't grip onto the carpet beneath it, then it will move around. Even if a mat has trapping edges and ridges or has fasteners to hold it in place, the core surface of the mat might move. This movement could be enough to move dirt off the area and onto the carpets in your footwells.

Look for products that have a non-slip backing. Some mats have a hook system that makes them grip the carpet itself. You can still remove these mats, but they tend to have a firmer hold that helps them stay in place more effectively.

3. A Design For Your 4WD Vehicle

Some 3D mats are made to fit in any car. While these mats give you some dirt protection, they won't necessarily give you full coverage. If a mat doesn't fit a footwell exactly, then dirt can come off its edges onto unprotected areas of your carpet.

You'll get a better fit if you look for products that have been designed to fit the make and model of your 4WD vehicle. These mats will be exactly the right shape for your footwells.
